Kuwaiti Trans Woman Can't Change Documents

16.6.03

Kuwait's Civil Bench of the Court of First Instance June 8 dismissed the case of a 25-year-old woman who wanted to change her name on official documents after undergoing a sex-change operation in Thailand.

The woman's lawyer said that although she was born male, she always felt female and now has "no manhood signs visible from the physiological point of view."

T.A.T.U - The first lesbians kiss in Kuwait ?

May 2003

The last information we had about GLBT and Kuwait was from 1997, when  Dr Alia Shoaib was dismissed from her professorial chair in Kuwait University for suggesting that homosexuality exists in the emirate.

That is way GME was quite surprised to find, few weeks ago ,in a kuwaiti music web-site called salmiya a positive article about the Russian-lesbian group T.A.T.U (!!!). The article on front page even contained links to T.A.T.U’s video clips (including lesbian kisses) and an interview with the two lesbian girls.

GME wrote an e-mail to the managers of the web-site and asked them if there really was a change of policy in Kuwait.

The reaction was quite fast. The day after  we found an article about Christina Aguilera’s ‘Dirty’ nominee to the Grammy award (at least they could put Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ video-clip...) instead of the article about T.A.T.U.

Till now there is no answer from the managers of salmiya web-site or from any other Kuwaiti Officials that we tried to reach.

For all the GLBT from Kuwait who want to see T.A.T.U great videos – here is the link

Dr Alia Shoaib was dismissed from her professorial chair in Kuwait University for suggesting that homosexuality exists in the emirate. Her comments were published in a local magazine, al-Hadaf, which was the also sued [sic] for obscenity. Dr Fazia Khorafi, the female president of the university and responsible for her dismissal, claimed that homosexuality does not exist in Kuwait. However the under-secretary of the education ministry described this view as being of a "dinosaur mentality". But the Information Minister, Sheikh Saoud al-Nasser al-Sabah said the professor's comments had "defamed the University". "We know that there are gays in Kuwait, they are hidden and should remain so". A leading Kuwaiti novelist, Leila Othman, is currently facing obscenity charges for her book "The Departure" which includes short stories dealing with lesbianism and gay male relationships.
