An
Israeli tourist recently released from a Lebanese jail described his
experience being held blindfolded in a basement cell surrounded by sounds of
torture, in an interview with Israel Radio aired Saturday.
Dual Israeli and German citizen Daniel Sharon was nabbed by Lebanese
policemen who suspected he was a Mossad agent while visiting friends in
Beirut.
Sharon says he was kept in squalid conditions fearing physical abuse for two
weeks until authorities decided what to do with him.
"I didn't see torture [of other inmates] because my eyes
were blindfolded," he said: "But I could hear it."
Eventually, after considerable pressure from the German embassy to secure
his release and vehement denial by Israel that he was involved in any kind
of espionage mission, all serious charges against Sharon were dropped.
"It was made clear to me at one point that in order to get out of this mess
I should say I am a homosexual," Sharon said. "I am not a homosexual."
He was subsequently tried for homosexuality - an offense in Lebanon - and
deported to Germany.
Before his arrest by Lebanese police, Sharon had visited the country 11
times using his German passport. Despite his recent experience, Sharon said
he still had fond memories of Lebanon, particularly of his friends and
parties at Beirut's beaches. |
