Two weeks ago, GME reported that no Lebanese film distributors had purchased the rights to screen the Oscar Award winning film, Brokeback Mountain in Lebanon. GME's report was not only to keep our reading public informed, but an attempt to persuade our friends in Lebanon to take the dare and screen this internatioanlly acclaimed film there. This week we have been notified that a censored version of Brokeback Mountain will start being screened across Lebanon this week. The film will be shown in the Curcuit Planete movie theaters beginning on March 23, 2006.
GME contacted Circuit Planete with a number of inquiries. Unfortunately, the only statement we were able to obtain from them is from Joelle Hatem, Senior Contents Manager, Empire Website. Her statement says, "In reference to one of your earlier queries about Brokeback Mountain, the film has just been cleared for relase in Planete Theatres on March 23 but not without cuts imposed by local censors. Unfortunately, our inquiries regarding the sales of tickets to the film and public reaction were left unanswered.
GME has learned that 2 weeks ago, the Cine Club at the Helem Center (Lebanon's LGBT Organzation) had a private screening of the full uncensored version of Brokeback Mountain. Although the screening was private and not publicized as most film screening at the club are, over 35 people heard about the showing of the film and attended.
The Lebanese public will be able to see the censored version of the film at their local theaters starting March 23 - or purchase the uncensored version on DVD from various international websites.
