Homosexuality
is officially illegal. As in many Middle Eastern countries, obvious
physical affection between men (which should not be mistaken for
homosexuality) is set against outward codes of behavior forbidding
gay relationships.
Due to
it's traditional society and values, the Jordanian gay scene is low
profile and subdued. Jordan is a friendly, wonderful country to
visit, but…certainly not a gay Mecca in the western sense.
In Amman,
there is cruising near the Roman Amphitheater at Hashemiya Square.
In Amman there are one or two "alternative lifestyle" coffee houses
near the first circle where you can definitely meet gay locals -
contact us for further information. There is also a great hamam
(Turkish bath-house) in the area - not gay but a very relaxing way
to spend a few hours with a wonderful soapy rubdown and massage. No
"happy endings" - but...very relaxing all the same.
In Aqaba,
there is cruising along the Corniche. There is no "Castro" or
"Village" area in Jordan. Eye contact basically your means of
communications - but as in most places, you should not take
unnecessary risks with people you are not sure about. Do not expect
to find gay life in any familiar sense of the word.
You should
definitely go to Jordan in order to immerse yourself in a world
completely unlike your own, to enjoy the renowned hospitality of the
Bedouins, and to experience that quickly disappearing travelers
paradise - spectacular scenery unspoiled as yet by mass tourism.
