Officially,
homosexuality is illegal in Lebanon as per Article 534 of the
Lebanese Penal Code and is penalized by up to one year of prison
and/or a fine. This law applies to any homosexual activity no matter
whether in public or in private home or hotel room between
consenting adults. No distinction is made between male of female
homosexuality. Rumor has it that this might be changed, but….as of
2003, it’s illegal.
However, Lebanon is
without a doubt the most progressive and tolerant of the Arab
countries when it comes to gay activities. Lebanese are a people
that like the good life, like fun, and gays are usually at the
forefront! It you’re looking for rainbow flags, you can forget it.
But, if it’s nice friendly interesting people and a good time –
you’ve come to the right place. Gay life is very much alive in
Beirut.
A short stroll down
any street will show you that eye contact is the name of the game.
(and these baby-blues saw some very good looking Lebanese guys!!)
For nightlife, have your first drink at the mixed “Pacifico” pub.
Have a nice snack at
“Sheik Manouch” – opposite the American
University. It’s easy to meet locals here, and they can update you on what’s
happening and where.
If it’s non-stop dancing and heavy duty “meeting the locals” – hit
“Acid.” A word of caution – the indoor gay scene in
Beirut is safe and
fun. Go out, have a great time, talk to people and enjoy. However,
outdoor beachfront cruising is definitely AYOR – and not
recommended.
